The University of WA has a legal and moral responsibility to its staff and students to provide a hazard-free workplace.
In the context of the requirement of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations, UWA has put in place its own safety and health policy, procedures and guidelines. It is the responsibility of all faculties and schools to ensure these principles are adhered to.
Please read the safety content of this procedures manual thoroughly since it contains important information on the safety systems and procedures that apply to the area you will be working in. Your cooperation will not only assist in preventing injuries, but also help to maintain a compliant and safer work environment for everyone.
It is important you are introduced to the Environmental Research Laboratory, the temporary Water Quality Laboratory in the Hydraulics Lab and the Field Staging Area.
This induction and your understanding of the following information will enable you to become aware of laboratory procedures and required safety practices to obtain the authority and confidence to work on your project in the laboratory or field. Without an induction and submission of this form, you are not authorised to use the laboratory or any equipment from the laboratory.
Users of chemicals in the SESE labs are to refer to UWA Safety and Health Chemical Safety website for chemical use procedures. An approved Chemical Risk Assessment is required prior to purchasing or using in stock chemicals.
Your risk assessment needs approval by the assessor/laboratory supervisor or delegated contact and your research/project supervisor. This ensures the laboratory can safely accommodate the chemical for storage and usage intended.
The CHEMALERT system is used to manage chemicals and access MSDSs in SESE laboratories.
