Engineering a water supply - article in UWA News 5 October 2009 UWA engineers have taken on a long-term project to help
provide the people of Timore Leste with clean water and
sanitation....
One of our postgrads, Revalin Herdianto, was in
Padang, Sumatra, when the earthquakes hit. Over the last 24
hours, UWA has been trying to contact him to make sure he is
safe.
Yesterday afternoon, Revalin managed to send a brief text message
to one of his friends here in Perth. Revalin and his family are
safe, but they cannot travel anywhere because the roads are
destroyed.
Lets hope Revalin and his family remain safe.

Young engineer recognised for outstanding work in
the community
Environmental engineer and anthropologist Jerome Bowen
GradIEAust has been announced 2009 WA Young Professional
Engineer of the Year at an Engineering Excellence Awards Night
on September 12.
The 27 year old was recognised for his outstanding work in
the community, which has included the delivery of a sustainable
water supply project to a remote community in Indonesia through
volunteer organisation Engineers Without Borders.
Jerome's professional career with engineering consultancy
WorleyParsons is focused on delivery sustainable outcomes in
the areas of water, energy and more recently carbon.
This focus on new, sustainable technology sees Jerome form part
of a specialised team often working on projects that may never
have been attempted before.
On the night, Paul Deuchar MIEAust, a Mechatronics engineer,
was recognised with a Special Commendation.
The WA Professional Engineer was Bob Wark FIEAust CPEng,
with a special commendation also being given in this category
to Paul Nichols MIEAust CPEng.
Congratulations Danni Barrington, winner of
a UWA Publications prize.
The Faculty wishes to offer our congratulations to Ms
Dani Barrington, a PhD candidate, from the School of
Environmental Systems Engineering for being awarded a publication
prize by Professor Doug McEachern, Deputy Vice-Chancellor
(Research and Innovation) for her paper "Application of
Hydrogen Peroxide for the Removal of Toxic Cyanobacteria and
Other Phytoplankton from Wastewater" published in
Environmental Science and Technology. To be eligible for these awards, a candidate must have been
enrolled in a PhD, professional doctorate or Master's by Research
degree at the University of Western Australia at the time the
work in question was prepared and submitted for publication (in
the case of work accepted for publication) or completed,
displayed or performed (in the case of creative work). The applications in each category were assessed by a panel of
senior academic staff, representing a range of disciplines
relevant to the work submitted. Each panel provides to the
Board of the
Graduate Research School a shortlist of recommended
applications and the Board determines the winner in each
category. For further details about the paper please visit the

Group of Eight Supports Research Links with
Germany
Research collaboration between Australia and Germany
will be further enhanced through a second round of funding
under the Go8's researcher exchange scheme with the German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The DAAD is Germany's national agency for the support of
international academic co-operation and is one of the
world's largest and most respected organisations in its
field.
Under the Go8 Australia Germany Joint Research
Cooperation Scheme, the Go8 and the DAAD have agreed to
provide a total of AUD2 million over three years to meet
the travel and living costs of researchers who spend time
at collaborating institutions in Australia or Germany.
"The Go8 is today delighted to announce the second call
for applications under this innovative scheme," said
Professor Doug McEachern, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research
at The University of Western Australia and Chair of the Go8
DVCs Research.
"The scheme will foster co-operation between leading
Australian and German researchers, with priority given to
projects that involve early-career researchers.
"The scheme is the first initiative of its type for the
Go8 and we are confident that it will lead to enhanced
linkages between Go8 universities and German research
organisations as well as the exchange of skills and
knowledge of mutual benefit to both countries."
Further details including application and selection
procedures are now available on the Go8 website at www.go8.edu.au
